LUDICRA – Play and Games in Ancient Rome

Guided tour of the archaeological site with a focus on games in Ancient Rome,
as known through archaeological finds and iconography.

Participants will then engage in group activities to experience first-hand what was presented during the visit.
(The activity can be tailored to suit different class needs.)

Objectives and skills developed: playful learning, peer interaction, understanding the value of rules and the importance of following them in different play contexts, development of strategic thinking (setting goals and applying game strategies).

It’s Showtime!

An engaging journey to discover the theatre and its role in Roman society, including a visit to the remains of the ancient theatre of Luni and related artifacts preserved in the museum.

Just like the Greeks before them, Roman actors wore masks to represent different characters. Often grotesque or comical in appearance, each mask had a specific purpose and function.

Each participant will create their own theatrical mask and take part in a brief performance, acting out a scene from a selected comedy.

Build Your Own Roman Colony

Target audience: Primary school (4th and 5th grade), lower secondary school

The Roman colony of Luna, founded in 177 BCE on land taken from the Apuan Ligurians, offers a unique perspective for understanding how a Roman city was built.

After visiting the archaeological site—where students will explore the remains of ancient buildings and sections of the cardo and decumanus maximus—the workshop will follow.
Each participant will then plan their own “ideal colony,” guided by the knowledge of ancient topographers and architects!

A Snapshot from Antiquity

On a September day in the late 4th century CE, a traumatic event—likely an earthquake followed by a devastating fire—disrupted daily life in the city of Luni.

In a house near the West Gate, a family was caught by surprise while cooking. Archaeological investigations have made it possible to reconstruct a “snapshot” of that moment, almost 2,000 years ago.

After an introduction to the most significant objects discovered during the excavation, supported by illustrated information cards, students will cut out and color drawings of the artifacts that interested them the most.

Marmor Lunensis – The Journey of a Marble Block from the Quarry to the Empire

A treasure hunt through the archaeological site!
During the activity, participants will solve riddles and puzzles that lead them from one clue to the next, as they follow the imagined journey of a marble block from the quarries of Luni to the port of Ostia, and then to destinations across the Roman Empire.

The guided tour of the city dedicated to the goddess Luna will conclude with a hands-on workshop.

How did the dominus of the villa and his family, especially the children, spend their time?

Some ancient games and pastimes are very similar to those still enjoyed today.

One example is the Stomachion, an ancient skill game which, according to some sources, was invented by the Syracusan mathematician Archimedes.

Countless shapes can be created by rearranging the pieces of this unique puzzle.

The activity will conclude with a workshop where participants will create their own puzzle — guaranteed to give you a “stomachache”!

By simulating an excavation, participants will experience the methods used by archaeologists, such as stratigraphic analysis of the soil. They will learn how to examine traces from the past and investigate artifacts to uncover the mysteries they hold. The activity will demonstrate how material evidence can be used to reconstruct the history of a people and their territory.

A visit to the archaeological area of ancient Luni to explore the history of one of the most important colonies of the Roman Empire.
We will walk along the decumanus maximus, visit the forum and the amphitheater, observe the domus and temples, and learn about how the ancient Romans lived.
The visit will conclude with a team game full of tricks and riddles!

The Art of Mosaic

The archaeological area of Luni features stunning mosaic works dating back to the 3rd–4th centuries CE.
Participants will observe the floor mosaics that once decorated the homes of wealthy patricians in the city. Afterwards, they will be introduced to the materials needed to create a mosaic—colorful tesserae made from different materials that come together to form masterpieces of the Roman Empire.

The Gladiator’s Kit

Starting with a visit to the amphitheater, participants will learn more about these ancient fighters—not only about the weapons they used and the training they underwent, but also about their diet and lifestyle.

Their fame was such that they were considered true idols!

The second part of the activity will be dedicated to creating one of the three essential tools of a Roman gladiator: the gladius (sword), the galea (helmet), or the shield.
